In the Middle Ages, numerous handcraft businesses set themselves up with their mills, forges and pump stations along the canals in the inner city to use the hydropower. Maybe as you are strolling around, you will stumble across the last traditional tannery in Augsburg. To this day, it is still located beside the water and still uses a tanner‘s floor just as it did back then.

But of course the old town of Augsburg has more to offer: Make a stop at an ice-cream parlour, visit the little shops or refresh yourself at the public drinking water fountains.

In post-medieval times, Augsburg was famous throughout Europe for its effective water management system. The city celebrated this achievement around 1600 by erecting three monumental fountains. That is why it is well worth visiting the Maximilian Museum where the original figures of the fountains and original technical models of Augsburg‘s historical water supply system are on display.
